Models of Honeycombs

We used toilet paper rolls to make our honeycomb models.

Expert Speaker

Our expert speaker joined us to share his knowledge of honey bees.
He is a local bee keeper in our area.

Honey Bee Postcards

Students have been working on their fact that they want included on their postcard. We are so excited to see the final product. Sets of these will be sold to friends and families. A set will also be presented to the Huntington Museum of Art and various community members.

SHARING OUR LEARNING!!!!

Students take responsibility for their own learning by sharing with the other kindergarten crews. Every Wednesday we travel from room to room learning about our friends' case studies. My kiddos absolutely love to do this! It always amazing me at how well they do!

Final Draft of Honey Bees

We had a great time working on our final honey bee mixed media drawings! Students first used pencils to draw the final sketch of their honey bee. Adjustments to drawings were made based on "two stars and a wish" protocol from previous draft work and thumbnail sketches. After pencil drawings were complete, students outlined their work with black sharpies and colored with crayons. Final touches were added by using watered down acrylic paint and doing a crayon resist technique over the whole paper and then spackling the entire piece with acrylic paint.

Great work kiddos! Now we need to add our
honey bee facts and get our postcards printed!
Love,
Ms. Cutler

Honey Bee Illustrations

Our kindergarten crew has been "busy as bees" working on their drafts of honey bees. As experts we want to make sure that we are looking closely at all the various parts of a honey bee. So far these are some of our third drafts.

Students have been learning an insect chant to aid in their understanding of the parts of a honey bee.

INSECT CHANT
(For all parts, students will echo the teacher.)
TEACHER: All insects!
STUDENTS: All insects!

TEACHER: Have 3 parts!
STUDENTS: Have 3 parts!

TEACHER: The head, the thorax, the abdomen!
STUDENTS: The head, the thorax, the abdomen!

TEACHER: The legs and wings are on the thorax! (clap)
STUDENTS: The legs and wings are on the thorax! (clap)

TEACHER: Six legs in all!
STUDENTS: Six legs in all!

TEACHER: And that's the way it is!
STUDENTS: And that's the way it is!

Curious Critters Around Us

Hello Kindergarten Crew Members!

We are getting ready to become experts in the field of some curious critters that live around us! Each of our fellow kindergarten crews will become experts on their own critter as well! After we become experts, we will get to teach our other kindergarten crew friends all that we have learned and they will teach us what they have learned too! I can’t wait!
You will become experts on this special critter and its role in our community. This critter can have an impact on goods and services in our community and the world at large. In our study, you will learn how this critter is a major pollinator and without them our food supply will diminish as well as our economy.
So…I was wondering…..can you guess what we will be studying?
You will each be given a photo puzzle piece. Look closely at the detail of your puzzle piece and find other crew members that have similar pieces. Work together as a group to glue your pieces together on construction paper. Take a look at your image and collaborate with your team to see if you can guess what our case study will be about. We will then tape all photo puzzles to the wall and talk about what our critter might be!!
